AMC Pacer X | 1975
This is a two-tone 1975 AMC Pacer parked in the pouring rain. The Pacer is one of the lesser appreciated American-made hatchbacks of the 1970’s, and though advertised as a compact car at the time, its width was comparable to most full size cars of its day. This, in addition to the cabin-forward design and wrap-around windows, made for an especially spacious-feeling cockpit. The globe-like styling was the creation of AMC design director Richard Teague and was considered very avant-garde in 1975. It should also be noted that this car was slightly asymmetrical in its design. The passenger-side door was in fact 4 inches longer than the driver-side for ease of entry into the back seats. This soaking wet example is the more-desirable sport version: The Pacer X. The X offered a floor-mount shifter, stiffer suspension, slotted alloy wheels, and snappy “Pacer X” vinyl decals.
Designed for George Jetson nearly 40 years ago… street-parked today on Potrero Hill. San Francisco, CA.
